» May-29-30, 2026. A two day National level lecture series on Differential Geometry was organized by the Mathematical Sciences Institute Belagavi.
The lecture series was held in hybrid mode, with local students and faculty participating in offline mode. Prof. T. E. Venkata Balaji the resource person for this lecture series traveled to MSIB, from IIT Madras and delivered four lectures in all.

The key note address was delivered by Dr. J. V. Ramana Raju after which Prof. T. E. Venkata Balaji introduced the topic of plane curves and space curves. Before this Prof. T Venkatesh Director MSI, Belagavi welcome the gathering and introduced the speaker. In the technical sessions differential geometry was discussed via curves , i.e Differentiable curves in the plane are functions mapping an interval of real numbers into R2. Also surfaces and higher dimensional generalizations were mentioned. In the case of parametrized differentiable curves in the plane the idea of curvature was emphasized as a very important parameter to describe the nature of curves. Further the normal field also was discussed. Applied aspects were also mentioned.
In physics, differential geometry underpins general relativity, where spacetime itself is modeled as a curved manifold. In engineering, curvature analysis helps in designing roads, bridges, and aerodynamic surfaces. In computer graphics, parametrized curves and surfaces are used to model smooth shapes and animations.
On day two, the speaker continued the technicalities of space curves where tangent normal and binormal were described to form the Frenet - Serret frames a corner stone of modern Differential Geometry. After describing high points of this theory, the speaker went on to describe some salient features of the theory of smooth oriented surfaces. Also some interesting facts about triangles embedded on curved surfaces were described. The event concluded with a discussion of career for young students and certificate distribution.
